The problem of pests and diseases must be tackled from the beginning. Crop rotation is a good practice. Thorough preparation of the soil is necessary to prevent problems with soil borne pests or diseases. Another step you can take is to actually select more hardy and resistant varieties. You can also grow you vegetables under netting to avoid the use of pesticides.
Keep in mind that home-grown fruits and vegetables are also better for you because they are free of pesticides and organic in nature.
