What is LUPUS

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus ( SLE) disease is a long term autoimmune disorder that may affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other organs. Being an autoimmune disease, contracting SLE will result in the body's immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissues (for unknown reasons), which could lead to chronic inflammation.SLE is more common in women but could be fatal for men as it is somehow more aggressive towards the male immune system.

Among the sign of SLE :

- experiencing pain all over body
- massive headaches
- butterfly shaped skin rash underneath the eyes
- fever, fatigue ,
- loss of appetite
- hair loss
- swollen glands
- sensitivity to light
- chest, muscle and joint pain
- ulcers in the mouth or nose and others.

If left untreated, lupus is potentially fatal. Lupus can lead to organ damage and failure. Serious conditions that can arise include kidney disease, pancreatitis, pleurisy, vasculitis, pericarditis, and cancer. Treatments for SLE include steroids, painkillers, and immune suppressants, as well as behavior and diet changes. In March 2011, Benlysta became the first FDA-approved lupus drug treatment in over 50 years. So far there are treatments available but the cure are yet to be found.
